Laurelmead is unlike other retirement communities in Rhode Island—and it has just a handful of peers in all of New England.

Opened in 1994, and located on 23 acres of the historic Butler Hospital campus, which was designed by Fredrick Law Olmsted in the 1880s, Laurelmead Cooperative offers independent living in a bucolic setting, with easy access to all that Providence—and New England—has to offer.

We are a resident-owned, cooperative retirement community. That means we’re not part of a national chain or of a complex non-profit life care community. At Laurelmead, the “owners” are shareholders; via resident participation in Policy Committees, and through the election of shareholders to the Laurelmead Board of Directors, residents determine the policies and the management of Laurelmead.

Because we’re governed by the people who live here, residents have a deeper investment in their community and more voice in how it is managed. Besides that, our residents have access to an exciting array of activities and events—from performances and movies to education and trips. These enriching opportunities are among the many reasons that Laurelmead residents are happy to be part of our retirement community.

Residents have moved to Laurelmead from many states, including Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, California, Massachusetts, South Carolina, Texas, New York, New Jersey, and Florida.
