Our congregation was started in January, 1988. Members of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Providence Rhode Island began meeting in one of their homes here in Smithfield. Because there were no Lutheran Church Missouri Synod congregations in the northern part of the State of Rhode Island, the group shared a mutual vision to begin one.

With the blessings and financial backing of St. Paul’s, the congregation began worshiping at Anderson Winfield Funeral Home in Greenville, RI. Their first Pastor, Rev. Larry Nichols, was installed in July, 1988. Within a year, the congregation grew to over 100 members and was forced to find a larger worship facility. The congregation began worshiping at the Laurel Grange in Glocester, RI where it remained for the next 9 years.

Purchasing land in the late 1990’s, the congregation dedicated their brand new facility in the spring of 1999. Our Redeemer is centrally located and with a great highway system, the congregation is able to serve families from all over the State of Rhode Island along with southern Massachusetts and eastern Connecticut.
