Painted Utility Box

 Providence, RI, 02908

The Art Transformer proposals are adaptations of drawings made as part of a series entitled Indexed, in which each piece is annotated with a legend of the marks and patterns specific to the image, decoding the visual language in use, like a map. For Indexed I and II, I included the legend in a side corner, pairing it with the “Providence, The Creative Capital” plug. The grey background will be painted in a shade as close to that of the neighboring sidewalk as possible. For wilds, which is more of an experiment, I opted for all-over, wallpaper-like visuals that cover the entire box. Using, again, a shade of grey that matches the surrounding sidewalk, I intend to create subtler marks, outlined like imprints on fresh cement.

The Art Transformer Project, organized by the Department of Art, Culture + Tourism, is geared towards the recognition and celebration of local artists. Artists are asked to paint City of Providence utility boxes with original designs. Once professionally painted, these utility boxes in neighborhood business districts will contribute to the vitality and attractiveness of the urban streetscape and deter graffiti.
