Metcalf Institute for Marine & Environmental Reporting is an international leader in providing science training for journalists.  The Institute is part of the University of Rhode Island (URI) Office of Marine Programs, based at the world-renowned URI Graduate School of Oceanography. The Graduate School of Oceanography is located on the University’s 200-acre Narragansett Bay Campus. On the bay’s West Passage with a deep-water pier and easy access to the open Atlantic, the campus offers an ideal location from which to explore coastal and oceanic environments.

The mission of Metcalf Institute is to expand accurate environmental news coverage through innovative training and resources for journalists, researchers, and other science communicators to build a deeper public understanding of science and the environment.

The Metcalf Institute provides a variety of professional development opportunities  for journalists from all media to learn about science and the research process, from understanding the process of scientific research to interpreting that research and its application to broadly relevant environmental issues. Metcalf also works to improve scientists’ abilities and confidence in communicating the broader implications of their research to the press and the public.

Metcalf programs and resources are underwritten by public and private foundations, a modest endowment, and private donations managed by the URI Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization.
