The Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RISPCA) is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that is governed by a Board of Directors, consisting of 15 members who serve without compensation. The Society was the first humane organization in Rhode Island and the 3rd oldest humane organization in the United States. At over 140 years old, we are the only non-profit animal rescue organization in the state of Rhode Island that is legally able to investigate and prosecute animal cruelty cases. The RISPCA is charged with the sole purpose of protecting animal life in all situations that might endanger them.

We are dedicated to crusading for the rights and welfare of all animals, great and small, through legal, educational, legislative and investigative means. We are strongly committed to ending pet overpopulation, the leading cause of death to sheltered animals.

Along with operating a full shelter that is home to over 100 cats, dogs and other domestic animals each day, community involvement is also a part of our mission. We offer medical attention for the pets of many impoverished, disabled and elderly individuals who otherwise could not afford to care for them through the Marvin Fund. We provide Humane Education programs for local schools, youth and adult groups free of charge, and provide pet assisted therapy programs to local nursing homes and hospitals. We also collect food for needy families in our state through our annual "Almost Free Rabies Clinic."
