RPM Voices of Rhode Island
Reaching People through Music

The RPM Voices of Rhode Island, formerly the RPM Singers, was formed in 2003 by musicologist/composer Dr. Clarice LaVerne Thompson, who at the time was an adjunct visiting lecturer in the Department of Africana Studies at Brown University, and the musical director for Rites and Reason Theatre. The choir’s early beginnings evolved out of a choral music workshop that
Dr. Thompson organized. Recognizing an opportunity to bring together a very diverse community to create music, Dr. Thompson opened the workshop to all people, regardless of prior musical training.

RPM Voices of Rhode Island performance history includes: October 2008 WaterFire [A Thousand Ships – A ritual of remembrance marking the bicentennial of the Abolition of the Transatlantic Slave Trade]; July 4, 2009 City of Providence Fourth of July celebration at India Point Park; 9/11 Remembrance City of Providence in 2009; 6th annual RI International Day of Peace celebration – Providence 2009; “Community Sing” at the RI Philharmonic Music School 2009-2010; 2010 & 2011 Martin Luther King, Jr. Hall of Fame Awards at Providence City Hall; Department of Art Culture and Tourism 2010 Winter Performing Arts Series performances; Department of Art Culture and Tourism Neighborhood Performing Arts Initiative for 2009 & 2010; Providence Sound Session Gospel Brunch for 2007, 2008, 2009 & 2010; Advent of Unity: Holiday Concert in 2009 & 2010.
