Tayo Heuser Exhibition

Tayo Heuser Exhibition

Presented by Jamestown Arts Center at Jamestown Arts Center

Jamestown Arts Center is pleased to present an exhibit highlighting the last three years of Tayo Heuser’s work including drawings, hand-made paper,

and sculpture. Heuser has exhibited her work internationally in Brussels, New York and Washington, DC., including several exhibitions at the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC.

Heuser’s works on paper employ a labor-intensive sizing technique that dates back to the 1300’s. Commonly used in the Ottoman Empire for Tugras and other calligraphic texts, this venerable process includes egg whites and burnishing with an agate stone. The result is a beautiful substrate where inks appear to float on top of the paper creating both a luminous and dimensional effect. Her installation Windows is comprised of gridded structures adorned with ethereal linen paper membranes in subdued colors. The poetic balance achieved welcomes contemplation.

Fusing line, color, and form Heuser’s work references countless cultures and eras with the ultimate aim of communicating the physical rhythm and meditative state, which occurs during her creative process. Her departure from representational imagery is both controlled and expressive further conveying this insight into the unconscious and the human spirit.

Born in Washington D.C., Heuser grew up in Africa and Europe. She holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and a Masters degree from Vermont College in Montpelier, VT. Heuser lives and works both in Providence, RI and Brooklyn, NY.
