Victorian Tea & Talk: "A Shade Above: An Analysis of New England Parasols & Their Material Culture"

Presented by Assumption Greek Orthodox Church at Cranston Historical Society

The Cranston Historical Society cordially invite you, family & friends to their annual Victorian Tea and Talk at historic Governor Sprague Mansion Museum, June 5 from 2 to 4 pm.  Join Maria Vazquez, owner of Royal Conservation & Exhibition, for a fascinating talk on A Shade Above: An Analysis of New England Parasols & Their Material Culture” .  She will share her knowledge of parasols and umbrellas from different periods and their purpose and uses. Ms. Vazquez states that Parasols are a largely undocumented genre of fashion history for more than 5,000 years. As a 19th century fashion accessory, they are rarely credited for their importance.  Parasols have been shading kings in friezes and laypersons alike for thousands of years.

Pianist, Andrew Kaplan of W. Warwick, will greet guests playing selections on the Mansion’s rare 1880s Steinway Grand piano.  Enjoy an afternoon of delightful tea and offerings, music & unforgettable history of parasols.  Reserve  by May 27 (401) 944-9226 (after this date, call to inquire if seats are available).
