Please join us for a lively discussion about Project Selva, with Lou Perrotti, Director of Conservation Programs at Roger Williams Park Zoo. You’ll hear how the ancient Japanese method of printing, gyotaku, is now being used by the indigenous groups of the Amazon Basin. Learn about this co-operative approach to the conservation of the Amazonian rain forest, which helps to develop skill sets and opportunities for indigenous artists – along with providing a much needed revenue stream for their communities. Lou will speak about his field work with the indigenous peoples of the Amazonian rainforests and the ongoing conservation efforts of the Roger Williams Park Zoo.

Lou Perrotti is the Director of Conservation Programs at the RI Zoological Society/Roger Williams Park Zoo. He serves as the Zoo’s representative on most local and national conservation collaborations including those at the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) level and manages many on-going conservation and research initiatives. He is recognized as a conservation expert and advisor to federal and local state agencies, educational, non-profit, and private institutions, providing specific knowledge and guidance. He is the project coordinator for the endangered American burying beetle captive breeding and reintroduction project at the RWPZ in partnership with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and many other state agencies. Lou currently serves on the board of the Rhode Island Natural History Survey, and is a member of the Environment Council of Rhode Island.
