Created as a reinvention of both theatre and audience to assure safety in the COVID-19 era, the event happens over 14 days August 9-22, and featuring dozens of performance artists in outdoor performances.
Decameron, Providence: New Stories for a New Era is co-produced by The Wilbury Theatre and WaterFire Providence featuring dozens of performing artists and community groups over the next two-weeks.
Like Boccaccio’s original ‘Decameron’, ‘Decameron, Providence’ happens over a span of 14 days. 2 days for Prayer. 2 days for Chores. 10 days for Stories.
Our Stories happen Tuesday – Saturday in 10 outdoor performance spaces, spread out over the WaterFire and ALCO building campus in the Valley neighborhood of Providence, RI.
These performance spaces are divided into ‘East’ and ‘West’ zones. Each zone includes 5 Artists in 5 outdoor performance spaces, and audience members are permitted to visit one zone per night.
We’ve been working hard to reinvent theatre during COVID-19 in a form that would keep the public and the actors safe. The first thing to eliminate was the theater itself! The performances from August 9-22 will be presented outdoors on 10 stages and performance areas. During the entire planning process our team has worked closely with members of the Brown University School of Medicine and the Rhode Island Dept. of Health to create this experience in step with the current best health practices and interpreted them theatrically, including adding Entr’Acte engagements that explain and reinforce the science and context of public health principles.
$10 tickets per person. All tickets need to be purchased in advance.
All guests will be required to wear face coverings and physical distancing guidelines will be strictly enforced throughout this performance to ensure the safest experience possible for our artists and guests.
Please note that Decameron, Providence has two separate performance tracks, East and West.
Each section will contain five of the ten performances that complete the Decameron.
To enjoy the full experience, audience members should select a ticket to each on different evenings.
Each section listed will be a brigatta of a limited size in accordance with current public health recommendations. If there are not enough tickets available in one section for your entire party, and you wish to enjoy the performance together, select a different section or date.
If you’d like to purchase a private brigatta for a group of friends, please contact christine@thewilburygroup.org to arrange this!
