Two sisters, maids to a wealthy society woman, act out fantasies of class, love and revenge while the lady of the house is out on a romantic rendezvous.
The Department of Theatre, Dance & Film at Providence College will open their spring semester with The Maids, by Jean Genet and translated from the French by Bernard Frechtman. Directed by Erin Joy Schmidt (assistant professor), the story follows two sisters, maids to a wealthy society woman, as they act out fantasies of class, love and revenge while the lady of the house is out on a romantic rendezvous. As their games intensify, the incipient violence escalates as they await Madame’s return.
Erin Joy Schmidt has arranged a production team of visiting guest artists to produce this intimate three-person drama. The Maids will feature set design by Sarah Markley, lighting design by Michael Clark Wonson, costume design by Chelsea Kerl, and sound design by Steve Shapiro.
The Maids will be presented in the Angell Blackfriars Theatre in the Smith Center for the Arts for one weekend, January 23 – 26. Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening performances at 7:30pm. Sunday matinee at 2:00pm.
