Edouard Duval-Carrie and the Art of Embedded Histories

Presented by Brown Arts Initiative and Brown University - Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice at Brown University - Granoff Center for the Creative Arts

Internationally acclaimed Haitian American sculptor and painter Edouard Duval-Carrié displays a series of artworks inspired by the complex histories of the Caribbean, including slavery, migration, colonialism, and Afro-religious practices. Also included are engravings from a recent artist residency in South Africa. Duval-Carrié’s work has been shown in Paris, New York, Madrid and Venice, and was the subject of a solo exhibition at the Perez Art Museum Miami in 2014.

This exhibition takes place in two concurrent parts: Memory and Embedded Histories in the Cohen Gallery at the Granoff Center for the Creative Arts  and The Kingdom of This World at the Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice. Memory and Embedded Histories is on view in the Cohen Gallery (154 Angell St., Providence) from Oct 24 – Dec 15, 2019, Mon – Fri from 9:00 am – 9:00 pm and Sat – Sun, 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm. The Kingdom of This World is on view in the Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice (94 Waterman St., Providence) from Oct 29 – Dec 6, 2019, Mon – Fri from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm.

The exhibition is FREE and open to the public. Presented by Brown University’s Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice and Brown Arts Initiative.
