Marco Oliveira and Tânia Oleiro, two award-winning young singers of contemporary Portuguese fado, perform at the Park Theatre in Cranston, RI at 7pm on Thursday, November 1st in support of their latest CD releases.
Marco Oliveira‘s two critically acclaimed records, “Retrato” (“Portrait”, 2008) and “Amor é Água que Corre” (“Love like Rushing Water”, 2016), chart fado’s topography in the modern world, with tales of longing (Portuguese “saudade”) that unwind through the labyrinth of Lisbon’s darkened streets. Oliveira is a singer, composer, lyricist and guitarist whose work has established him as one of fado’s best young talents. Within fado’s vibrant and ever-evolving community, he has earned Best Singer awards in Lisbon’s annual Great Night of the Fado as a youth and as an adult. As a player of the “viola do fado” (classical guitar), as a composer and as a lyricist, he has collaborated with some of contemporary fado’s best artists.
Tânia Oleiro‘s debut record, “Terços do Fado” (2016), mines some of fado’s richest territory, with performances that build on fado’s fundamental musical frameworks and contemporary lyrics that speak to modern sensibilities and age-old truths. This paradox is essential to fado’s mystique, and to the grace and beauty that Oleiro brings to her performances. Her highly anticipated first record, “Terços do Fado” (Fado Triptych), features some of fado’s best lyricists, composers and musicians in performances that are sublime from end to end.
Oliveira and Oleiro will be joined by Sandro Costa on the Portuguese guitar. Costa is known both for the quality of his improvisations and for his free-flowing, collaborative approach to this music. He is a master improviser and provocateur who has honed his craft through countless performances in Lisbon’s most traditional taverns and community collectives (a bedrock of the tradition), as well as on national and international stages. He has performed with Carminho, Mísia, Ricardo Ribeiro and many other fado artists in the Portugal, the US and abroad.
