COLOR/SURFACE/TEXTURE/PATTERN: MONOTYPE & RELIEF

COLOR/SURFACE/TEXTURE/PATTERN: MONOTYPE & RELIEF

Presented by AS220 at AS220 Print Shop

– Monotype and relief printmaking are flexible processes that allow rich build up of visual elements. In monotype, Plexiglas plates covered in ink can produce different effects as the ink is covered with paper or plastic stencils, wiped away with rags or brushes, or diluted with solvents. In relief, artists carve away at linoleum or wood blocks to achieve expressive lines and textures. Both of these processes can be layered and mixed, with monotype giving you bold shapes and splashes of color and relief giving you structure and depth through line. In this class you will learn how to prepare monotype and relief plates and how to print images using an etching press. You will learn how to cut stencils, use found materials to create printed textures, and how to build images using combinations of different processes. Whether your style is graphic or painterly, clean or rough around the edges, these techniques offer something everyone can use. This class is great for beginners and experienced printmakers alike, and students are encouraged to experiment with techniques at all levels of expertise.
