First Fridays is pleased to announce its fifth and final concert of the spring season. On Friday, June 1, 2018 at 8 pm, the duo DavaMikePresents, consisting of dancer/choreographer Davalois Fearon and composer/instrumentalist Mike McGinnis, will perform multimedia works that combine dance, live music and poetry.
“Time to Talk” was inspired by Fearon’s own experience of racial bias in academia and the dance world, and it addresses American history, dance history, racial identity and systemic racism. Through dynamic, fluid dance, live music, poetry, and visual art, “Time to Talk” brings attention to inequalities and encourages audience members to question how they may knowingly or unknowingly contribute to maintaining social inequity.
“Ängsudden Song Cycle” is a dance piece commissioned by composer and clarinetist McGinnis, set to his landscape tone poem of the same name. The music was inspired by the visual artwork of Filipino American MuKha, who used the disappearing language of a small tribe in the Philippines to create a series of poems and paintings about the Swedish archipelago at Ängsudden.
The series will resume in the fall on the first Friday of each month. Concerts are open to the public, with a $10 suggested donation, and free refreshments provided by Campus Fine Wines and Revival Brewing. The Music Mansion is located at 88 Meeting Street, Providence, RI, 02906 (entrance on the east side of the building) and free street parking is available.
