GLÁS’ (green): A contemporary view of the Emerald Isle

Presented by City of Providence Department of Art, Culture + Tourism at Gallery at City Hall

City of Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza and the Department of Art, Culture + Tourism invite you to visit the Gallery at City Hall for its newest installation ‘GLÁS’ (GREEN): A contemporary view of the Emerald Isle by Siobhan Cox-Carlos (SCC Silks). This exhibition of landscapes features 2D oil paintings and was curated with support from the Ireland West International Trade Centre.

‘Glás’ is the gaelic word for ‘Green.’ Painter Siobhan Cox-Carlos believes it to be symbolic of Ireland, often known as the Emerald Isle because of its patchwork of green fields. A farmer’s daughter, Cox-Carlos’ love of the Irish landscape is deep as she has been painting it for thirty years. Glás is a representative selection of the elements that she loves most about the country – landscapes, gardens, interiors and, in recent years, abandoned barns and cottages. The artist’s studio, depicted in the painting “Wild Rose Studio,” was one such cottage. Measuring a cozy 23’ x 15’, this cozy structure would have been, at one point, a two room home for a farmer. Cox-Carlos is intrigued by the shapes that these bucolic buildings cut into their surrounding landscapes. For her they represent sadness, emigration, and loss, of which there has been much in Irish history. She says she wants “to bring them back to life again, even if only on canvas, let them live, breathe and dance!”

About the Artist:
Siobhan Cox-Carlos is a painter known for her use of vibrant colour and love of texture and pattern. She has strong affinities with American Abstract Expressionists, in particular Willem De Kooning, Hans Hoffman, Wolf Kahn, and Joan Mitchell, and aims to fuse her more figurative initial sketches with the energy, emotion, and freedom of expressionist sentiment.
