The Sea Pageant

The Sea Pageant

Presented by Strange Attractor Theatre Co. and Providence Athenaeum at Easton's Beach

A one-day-only, one-hundred-person choral performance on First Beach in Newport on Aug 21, 2017 during a solar eclipse. Built with Rhode Islanders from many walks of life and disciplines, “The Sea Pageant” will use Rhode Island history to create a new piece of theater for Rhode Island’s most important relative, ancestor, ally, and adversary: the ocean.

In addition to movement and song, visual artists are also involved, preparing the sandy performance area in the morning before the afternoon event.  While there will be rehearsed pieces performed in unison, there will be moments and opportunity for observers and audience members to participate as well.

The Sea Pageant will conclude with a picnic starting at 2:30pm, the totality of the eclipse.

Supported in part through a residency at the Providence Athenaeum and funding from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts. The Sea Pageant is approved by the Easton’s Beach Commission.
