As a graphic artist, calligrapher, and mother, I have always been enamored with both the world of words and the art of children’s book illustration. It was when I took my first class at the Rhode Island School of Design and was introduced to the world of cut paper illustration that I decided to pursue the art form for myself. Since that first class, I have worked to combine these two interests into a cohesive whole. My work recently has moved into the realm of cards, where I merge this interest of words and word structure onto the canvas of a card. I find that it is often the tiniest of details – a found object, or the serendipitously discovered paper sample — that inspires me to create. I never tire of the moment of surprise I experience when aided by my exacto knife and a bit of glue, my little mound of colored paper fragments is somehow magically transformed into a whimsical scene or character. My art a multi-dimensional, multi-media circus of line and texture, colored pencils and pastels – a paper performance – intended to engage and delight children of all ages.
