Brown University's Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World

Brown University’s Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology promotes investigation, understanding, and enjoyment of archaeology and art, focusing on the ancient Mediterranean, Egypt, and Near East, but connecting with archaeology of all parts of the globe, contemporary and ancient.

Our goal is to foster an interdisciplinary community of interest in the archaeology of the ancient world, and in the discipline of archaeology more generally. Our faculty and students are from a wide range of countries and backgrounds — and Brown University’s fieldwork and research in archaeology and the ancient world reflects and builds on that multiplicity of perspectives. Our mandate is to promote research, fieldwork, teaching, and public outreach, with the Institute’s associated faculty, students, and facilities serving as a hub for this activity.

We organize frequent public lectures, conferences, and workshops, as well as exhibits. Brown University’s undergraduate and graduate programs in Archaeology and the Ancient World are based in the Joukowsky Institute, as are many of the university’s archaeology courses. We regularly host visiting students and faculty members, whose perspectives and experiences enhance our intellectual breadth and connections. We have a very active fieldwork profile, with projects in Egypt, France, Greece, Guatemala, Italy, Jordan, Sudan, Turkey, the US, and West Indies.

A core aspect of our mission is outreach to the Rhode Island community. We are one of the founders of Think Like an Archaeologist, a program for 6th graders.
