Join us at Bell Street Chapel for a curator’s talk about our spring exhibition and an (optional) fun, interactive workshop exploring the layered stories of vacant places. With our building undergoing extensive renovations, PPL decided to take our 2019 spring exhibition online and out into the streets.
The exhibition, part of the 41.8219° N, 71.4171° W exhibition and program series, hones in on the places our eyes often pass over, telling the stories of empty lots, parks, parking lots, crumbling foundations, and fields. Focusing on 12 vacant and open spaces throughout the city of Providence, the exhibition includes temporary, site-specific signs posted in each location during spring 2019, along with a digital tour that tells each place’s story using maps, photographs, and information from the library’s Special Collections.
The evening will begin with a short presentation from curator Angela DiVeglia, who will show highlights from the exhibition, discuss her research and curatorial process, and answer questions from the audience. The second half of the event will consist of an optional interactive workshop with drawing and writing prompts to encourage audience members to engage with vacant and open spaces from their day-to-day lives or from their memories.
