Machines With Magnets, a contemporary gallery space, music venue and recording studio, will display the sculptural works of Emily Baker, Santa Barbara, CA, and Will Simons, Providence, RI.

The exhibition opens Thursday, March 7th with a reception for the artists from 6-9 pm. Live music by Su Casa (Providence, RI) will accompany the opening and Arc Iris (Providence, RI) will play a set at 9 pm followed by DJs Quinntronix and SoundsBySteph. The exhibition will be on display through Friday, April 12th. 

Both Emily Baker and Will Simons’ practices have evolved through spending significant time working in The Atrium, the academic and foundry space within the sculpture department at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where they received their MFA and BFA in sculpture, respectively. The artists share an interest in installation and materiality making for a dynamic pairing of work at the Machines With Magnets Gallery.

Baker employs materials such as latex, steel and cast iron to investigate themes of the body, specifically athleticism, injury, and repair, pulling from her background as a competitive gymnast. She will be showcasing a new body of work including suspended steel forms with latex skins that push the materials to their physical limits.

Simons’ work in clay, metals and wood examines the relationships between interior and exterior spaces. His work utilizes both craft and architecture to inform sculptures that act as markers of his human experience. He will exhibit a collection of work from the last year ranging from wheel thrown, wood-fired forms to life size, immersive sculpture.
