Common Fence Music’s acclaimed Fall Moon Festival is back, celebrating the art of song and the songwriters who create them. Inspired by songwriting masters both contemporary and decades-old, Amythyst Kiah has become a powerful voice within the folk music industry, offering a fresh take on American roots music and advocating for marginalized artists. In this discussion and demonstration, Amythyst will share her perspectives on artistic inspiration, the struggles and rewards of the creative process, and the diverse female songwriters – from Memphis Minnie to Tori Amos – that have influenced and helped inform her own work. In this two-hour workshop, acclaimed Massachusetts-based singer-songwriter Heather Maloney will share and discuss her writing process and how she uses her music as a medium through which to make a strong social statement. By modeling the various stages of her work, she will provide amateur and aspiring songwriters with a clear understanding of the journey a song may take from raw creation to perfected work of art. After allowing time for questions, Heather will then give workshop participants the opportunity to share an original composition and receive constructive critique from her and the other participants.
