Collins has created several large abstract paintings and smaller mixed media and acrylic works on paper for this exhibit. Her work is inspired by the subtle relationships of color, line and proportion that evoke a feeling of something nonverbal, but also express the observed order and beauty of nature and the built environment. She says, “Learning to be lost is the essence of my process and it is what I would describe as the wonderful mystery of art-making,” adding, “I am particularly inspired by patterns, color, movement, and line and how they establish spatial relationships that reflect an alternative, yet somehow authentic reality.
Harris is a Jamaican-born watercolorist and oil painter based in Rhode Island. She attended Rhode Island School of Design where she earned her BFA. Her primary sources of inspiration are nature and the memory of her Jamaican roots. Her work strives to express both the sounds and the gentle quiet of the Caribbean. She is especially interested in how her lost memories can be triggered by nature. Her recent works tap into memories of Caribbean plants, specifically the banana tree, and explore techniques that bring their intricate textures, patterns, and colors to life.
Martiesian has been painting for more than 50 years. Represented by both the Bert Gallery and Charlestown Gallery, she is one of the founding members of Gallery Night Providence. Her paintings focus on nature, both in the urban environment and in the wild, undeveloped stretches of the landscape. She says, “I look to nature for its infinite variety, for its serendipitous nature, for its sheer unexpectedness. And I try to emulate that unpredictable quality in my paintings.”
In addition to Collins, other IFA artists who will be participating in the exhibit include Sally Barker, Mary Dondero, Stephen Fisher, Philip Gruppuso, Carl Keitner, Eileen Mayhew, Yolanda Mazzoni, Linda Megathlin, Mercedes Nuñez, Anne Marie Rossi, Lenny Rumpler, Howard Windham and Meredith Wolf.
Regular gallery hours are Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 6 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. and by appointment by emailing imagogallery@gmail.com.
IFA encourages IFA artists and guest artists to explore their creativity by providing a supportive community and exhibition space. IFA also focuses on art programming for the public and collaborative projects with other local and regional organizations to promote the arts. Its mission is to inspire creativity and promote art-making that enriches the community.
